Questions Surround Broncos Season Opener Against Giants
The Denver Broncos will kick off the 2021 season with a road matchup against the New York Giants on Sunday afternoon.
This is a matchup of two teams looking for a bounce-back year in 2021, and the Broncos are slight 2.5-point favorites in Week 1.
The Broncos have already decided to go with Teddy Bridgewater at the quarterback position to begin the season, and it doesn’t sound like there will be two quarterbacks playing. Drew Lock does give the Broncos a solid backup option, but the team is hoping that Bridgewater takes control of the position.
Injuries were a big story for the Broncos in 2020, and the team was hoping to avoid that same fate in 2021. The injury list was small for the Broncos this week, but a notable name was listed on the report.
New York also has one of its star players listed on the injury report, and these injuries could affect how the game is played on Sunday. The Broncos are always a much better team at home than on the road, but this is a winnable matchup in Week 1.
Chubb Might Be Out
The Broncos are hoping that Bradley Chubb will be available on Sunday for the season opener, but things have not been progressing in that direction. Chubb has been on the injury report all week long, and his participation in practice has been hit or miss.
The Broncos are officially listing Chubb as questionable for the game on Sunday, which doesn’t exactly give any inclination as to which direction that will go. Earlier in the week, Chubb was kept off of the practice field entirely and was a limited participant near the end of the week.
Even if Chubb is out of the lineup on Sunday, the Broncos should have a defense capable of taking over the game. Head coach Vic Fangio has done a great job with his defense since arriving in Denver, and he will have his star back in Week 1.
Linebacker Von Miller was forced to miss the 2020 season with an injury, and there were some doubts that the team would bring him back in 2021. Miller is back on the field and will be looking to lead the Broncos in the season opener.
Barkley Wants to Play For Giants
The New York Giants have an even more significant injury concern as their most talented player might be out of the lineup on Sunday. The running back, Saquon Barkley has been a limited participant in camp this week as he continues to recover from a torn ACL suffered a season ago.
Barkley has insisted that he wants to play and feels like he is healthy enough to do so. The Giants’ team doctors have not yet officially cleared Barkley to suit up, and that is a decision that won’t be made until right before game time.
The Broncos will catch a massive break if Barkley cannot make a start on Sunday in Week 1.
