Avalanche, Nuggets Both Looking Solid in Playoffs
It’s an exciting time for professional sports in the state of Colorado as both the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Nuggets have started their playoff pushes.
Both teams are expected to be title contenders, but anything can happen in the playoffs.
Both teams were off to terrific starts to their seasons before the COVID-19 pandemic shut both teams down. There was plenty of disappointment throughout the state when these shutdowns occurred, but now both teams are back in action.
Avs Move Past Coyotes
The Colorado Avalanche earned the second seed in the Western Conference as they went 2-1 during the round-robin style tournament. By earning the second seed, Colorado drew the Arizona Coyotes in the first round.
The Avalanche are one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup this season, and they have looked that way so far in the postseason. Colorado just eliminated the Arizona Coyotes in five games, and the final two games of the series were blowout victories.
Colorado won the first two games of the series before the Coyotes bounced back with a 4-2 win in Game 3 of the series. The Avs wasted little time turning the momentum around again, cruising to a 7-1 victory in Game 4 of the series. Colorado was able to move past the Coyotes by earning another 7-1 victory in Game 5.
Nazem Kadri and Nathan MacKinnon have led the way on offense for the Avs so far in the playoffs, and they were the stars in the Game 5 win as well. MacKinnon had two goals and two assists in the win, while Kadri chipped in with a pair of goals.
Phillip Grubauer and Pavel Francouz have each made starts in the playoffs, and both goaltenders have earned a shutout. Colorado wants to win games with its high-powered offense, but they have been solid in net as well.
Nuggets-Jazz Series Tied at 1-1
The Denver Nuggets are taking on their Northwest Division rival, the Utah Jazz, in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. Denver was able to secure the third seed in the Western Conference with a strong performance during the NBA restart. Things seem to be going well since Booth took up the GM position.
Denver and Utah have built up a terrific rivalry over the last few seasons, which was evident in the series opener. These two teams needed overtime to decide Game 1, but it was the Nuggets that took complete control in the final five minutes.
Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic were the two biggest stars for Denver in the series opener, just as they have been the entire season. Murray led the way with 36 points in the win, while Jokic added 29 points and 10 rebounds.
If the Nuggets are going to find a way to escape past the Utah Jazz in this series, they are going to need to slow down Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell has emerged as one of the top players in the league, and he dropped in 57 points in the Game 1 loss.
Utah was able to get revenge over the Nuggets in Game 2 of the series, coming away with an impressive 124-105 victory behind 30 points and eight assists from Mitchell. Denver needs to get back to playing terrific defense if they want to advance past the first round.
